It's been two weeks since Jeremy, I and 20 BSM leadership students moved into our new home: Townhouse 14 at Bayou Oaks.
We have 14 other organizations (fraternities and sororities) as our neighbors! And apartment residents.
Within the first few days of us being here, TKE and PIKE brought us cakes to welcome us to the community! Right away junior, Danielle Chan, and senior, Bekah Fort, decided to return the hospitality and bake cakeballs and cookies for all of the townhouses - it took them hours... but they turned out delicious and were delivered last Tuesday evening!
Ever since then, everyone that we've run into that finds out we're part of the BSM praises us for the delicious sweets! I'm glad we could make such a great mark on the community already!
Greek Life culture is very welcoming and enthusiastic. They are involved in Student Government. They each have philanthropies. And they love a good party! They are proud of being Greek and like to talk about what social activities they are involved in. We have discovered so much within two weeks about how to engage just because they knock on our door with an invitation and conversation.
Here's the typical week at Bayou Oaks:
Monday Night - Every house has a meeting: Fraternities start at 7pm, Sororities at 7:30pm
Tuesday (We have our worship event at the BSM)
Wednesday
"Thirsty" Thursday Night - At least 3 parties with alcohol and loud music
Friday Night - At least 3 parties with alcohol and loud music
Saturday Night - At least 3 parties with alcohol and loud music
"Sober Up" Sunday - Students relax and sometimes play outside while they rest and prepare for class the next day
Students are also trying to be intentional with striking up conversation on the bus that takes them from the Bayou Oaks complex to the University Center. It's about a 10 minute ride and many Greek students are in my former major - Hotel & Restaurant Management - which is a great way to relate to them!
