Building Foundations of PHOS

We've been in the PHOS house for 7 months now!
PHOS means

1. light

      1. emitted by a lamp
      2. a heavenly light such as surrounds angels when they appear on earth

      2. fire because it is light and sheds light

1. God is light because light has the extremely delicate, subtle, pure, brilliant quality
2. of truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual purity associated with it
3. that which is exposed to the view of all, openly, publicly
4. reason, mind
1. the power of understanding esp. moral and spiritual truth

So we decided that our emblem would be a lighthouse and our colors blue, white and yellow.

The question Jeremy and I gave the students to ponder as they embarked on this journey to a missional community with us was... "wouldn’t it be amazing if people around us read the Bible and could relate the type of community they see in Scripture to the one lived out in this house?"

Last semester we focused inwardly on the building up of each other and merely getting to know each other. As a family we faced housekeeping matters (chores), conflict resolution, and just adjusting to living with 20 other people. With a heart of dedication to the Lord in prayer and honesty with one another, we made major strides in unity among us. And we hosted a few events to get to know the community. One of the highlights was when the entire Greek community was cheering "B-S-M" at the Phi Mu Field Day in October.

This semester our goal is to be more outwardly focused. We've laid the groundwork to have unity as we stretch out our hands and feet with words of truth to speak to our neighbors. Weekly we have music school students come over to hang out, on Wednesdays we have jam sessions on the porch with potential to cook out on the grill, and our ladies have coordinated a dessert party to meet the girls in the sororities.
